About Lent on Leap Day!

Yes, I know Lent started last Wednesday. But, since it's Leap Day and it only comes around every four years, I figured it would be a notable day to finally write down our goals for these long 40 days. (so thankful for Sundays where we feast and break Lent weekly to celebrate His resurrection!) This year after building up for the past three years where we gave up certain things for shorter periods of time, we are all giving up one thing (well, I chose two Tar chose 3) for six whole weeks. And, to my surprise, Taryn chose to continue with this family tradition at college even though she really didn't have to. The goal of course is to practice self-discipline in areas where it is in our human nature to overindulge and when we feel that pain to replace it with prayer and dependence on the Lord. I have been praying a LOT more than I usually do.

Howard - Going to bed late... He is usually up till 1a.m. and once in awhile later than that. He has to be in bed with lights out by 11p.m. on nights he is off and at 11:45p.m. the minute he gets home from his job at the hospital. This has already been really difficult for him.

Alleyn - Desserts and Social Networking (yes, fb and Pinterest!)

Taryn - Unnecessary Carbs, sweets of any kind and desserts

Stephen - Listening to the radio in the car. He has taken to singing instead :o)

Paige, Chris and Sam - Desserts/candy

In other news, Sam finally has one day off with 7 performances behind him and 7 more to go. He has grown by leaps and bounds in his self-consciousness in front of an audience. If you would have asked me this time last year if Samuel would ever be on stage, I would have said, "No way!" But, here he is doing 14 shows in one week. With every show, he improves and loosens up just a little bit more. He is far from being completely free up there but for his first gig, he is doing remarkably well.

Good news!

His fourth one in 3 years, Steve once again received the Lionheart award for the Grace Academy swim team tonight! What a way to end his athletic career as a graduating senior. We are so proud of him.

Sam made it through his dress rehearsals. They did finally decide to mic him for his monologues since they are so long and they could barely hear him over the set changes! He is learning how to project his voice and speak slowly. Now, if he can continue to do so for all fourteen performances, he will be overjoyed. He is so excited for opening night tomorrow. Although I know he will do great, I am still a bit nervous for him. Thankfully, he doesn't seem worried at all!

I miss my Taryn!

Mattress-sliding down a staircase at her college!

Since I miss my oldest baby doll so much today (which btw is her half birthday, Happy 18.5 Tar!) I thought I'd post some pics to remind me of her. I borrowed the following photos off of her FB and her tumblr!
According to Taryn, her lucky paper writing spot. I think she should be IN this photo!

Behind-the-Scenes

Today we had to strike (in theatre language that means take apart the set) Children of Eden and Set Load-in (bring all set stuff from warehouse to the theatre) Treasure Island in the same three-hour timeframe. There was a lot of heavy lifting. I didn't feel like I was contributing much but I found enough pieces of lumber to haul and set pieces just right for my size to move! It was an eye opener to see the warehouse brimming with props, sets and tools. I've never had to do this work before since Taryn was old enough to do it herself when she was part of the playhouse. I had to stand in for Sam who isn't yet old enough to help out. I met moms and dads of other actors who are cast in Sam's upcoming play. I watched all the C.O.E. teens work together to break down, haul, and put away endless pieces of their set. For Paige, there were a lot of hugs all around on our departure as this was truly the end of their production. As for Sam, things are just starting to escalate for him. He had his head shot taken today and rehearsals went long over its scheduled time. Please pray for him. He thinks he has allergies but I think he caught my cold, which I caught from Paige so I'm hoping he gets over it soon since opening night is just around the bend and he has long hours of rehearsals day after day to get through.

The following are photos of life behind-the-scenes of Children of Eden; backstage, dinner out between shows and the cast party!

Mid-Month Report

Taryn received an email this week from the christian conference center in California to schedule an interview for the job she applied for there as a day camp counselor! Her phone interview is tomorrow, Thursday, February 16th at 4:30p.m. EST. Please pray for her at this time if you are able that if it is His will for her to be in California this summer to serve kids as a counselor, that the director of day camp would find favor in her answers and she will make it to the next step in the process.

Stephen is still in waiting mode in regards to any financial help with joining the year-round swim team at his workplace. He has been persistent about communicating with various higher-ups to consider helping him so that he can swim with the team sooner. We are hoping he gets a definitive answer soon and hopefully towards his favor. If not, an exceptionally fat tax return would probably help us to help him. Either option would be warmly embraced!

Paige survived her more-than-hectic schedule of rehearsals and performances. She had a theatre high and then a physical/emotional crash directly afterwards. She trudged through the next day of school without much energy, came home, napped, did some homework and then slept again for nearly 12 hours. She is now almost back to her normal self and a doable schedule.

Chris and Sam are in training with schoolwork towards working autonomously. To prepare them both for high school at a college-prep level, since February began they have had to read, research and answer questions for all their subjects, plan all their work in a planner and execute it on their own. We started out this fall through January reading all the history out loud and answering the questions together so they would learn how to find the answers they needed and form their answers reasonably. Now, after a few weeks on their own, they are performing better than expected. And as far as school goes for Chris, he is well on his way to finally feeling a part of this new group of kids. Many of the boys in his class have known each other for years and I knew it would take awhile for him to feel accepted but thankfully the past few weeks, he has consistently shared that he is enjoying the kids at school. That bodes well for his near future since he will be going to high school with most of these same kids in the fall and spending three full days a week with them instead of just once a week.

Sam has done it! He has memorized all his lines. Rehearsals have picked up to six times a week for 2-4 hours at a time. They are now working on mannerisms and expression. Next week, they can finally be on stage to practice choreography, lighting and have full dress rehearsals. On a funny note, Sam despises his costume. Opening night is already next Friday, February 24th! Please pray that he would stay in character, recall his lines and have fun with this opportunity.

As for me, as the boys are both heading towards high school and we have two more entering college shortly, my prayer is that the Lord would provide just the right job to help ease me into mostly full-time work in the next 3-5 years. Ideally, I would love a 10-20 part-time administrative position somewhere (by this summer?) which could possibly lead to full-time eventually OR two part-time posts. This will help us pay those college tuition bills and feed three growing teenage boys who seem to eat endlessly. Pray that wherever this job opportunity may be that He would open up that possibility in His timing and not in mine. I am just so impatient and want things to go as I plan when I plan it. Sound familiar? I'm sure none of you have ever struggled with that!

Lastly, Howard has a leadership retreat this weekend for our church. They will be determining the future of our church family in regards to moving into a new temporary building, possible church-planting, and more! Our church is young, only ten years old, and it is exciting to see where the Lord leads next.
